The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Construction gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Construction sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and work. The Construction Industry is diverse and offers the opportunity to participate in all kinds of projects such as office buildings, plants, schools, roads, hydroelectric dams, hospitals, churches, houses and tunnels. Large or small, the projects are managed, budgeted for, planned and built carefully and capably by people with the ingenuity, skill and education to create the buildings of tomorrow.

Health and Wellness
The demand for professionals in the Health and Wellness sector in Ontario and across Canada is increasing as the age of our population increases. As such, this sector has a wide variety of career opportunities and employs close to two million people across Canada. Kinesiologist, child care worker, fitness instructor, nurse, veterinary technician, hospital porter and medical technician are just some of the numerous occupations that the SHSM Health and Wellness program prepares students to pursue.

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Hospitality and Tourism gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Hospitality and Tourism sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. The five tourism industries in Canada include opportunities in hospitality and tourism, accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and travel services. Tourism in Ontario is a dynamic, growing sector. Prospects for satisfying employment and career advancement in the hospitality industry have never been better, locally and world-wide.

Information and Communications Technology
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Information and Communications Technology sectors while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, community, university and the workplace. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is increasingly becoming an essential part of many industries. There are requirements to save time and increase efficiency, advance technology and innovation, for electronic access to finances or online shopping, creativity, marketing, and communications. ICT includes both the hardware and information technology skills, as well as the creative, communications and graphic arts expertise.

Manufacturing
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Manufacturing gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Manufacturing sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and work. In Ontario, the manufacturing sector employs the most people and the production of consumer and industrial goods are essential for the province’s prosperity. Although the manufacturing sector remains a powerhouse in our economy, the sector is undergoing fundamental changes as it refocuses it’s strategy and remains competitive in a global economy.

Non Profit
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Non-Profit gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Non-Profit sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and work. The Non-Profit sector offers a range of dynamic, engaging, and rewarding careers for those who share the sector’s common vision: to make a difference. The sector’s employers include some 69,000 non-profit organizations nationwide. These organizations are active in a variety of areas – health and social services, religion, development and housing, arts and culture, sports and recreation, environment, education and research, fundraising, law, advocacy, and politics and operate in Canada and throughout the world.

Transportation
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Information and Communications Technology sectors while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing apprenticeship, college, university and work. Transportation is essential to our everyday life. Different modes of transportation including air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline and space provide many career options for those interested in the field. In particular, skilled automotive service technicians are in great demand and require a breadth of knowledge from seat-belt systems to the latest diagnostic equipment.
